  • Central Neighborhood is the heart of Traverse City; most of its homes were built between 1890 and 1914. The neighborhood is on the National Register of Historic Places and is roughly bounded by 5th, Locust, Union, 9th, and Division Streets. The residents, including myself, take pride in the restoration and renovation of its many historic homes and enjoy its quiet tree-lined streets and sidewalks. Central Neighborhood primarily residential, including 407 single-family residences, and eight churches and schools. Neighborhood architecture includes versions of Queen Anne, Italianate, and Neo-Georgian.

    Sixth Street in Central Neighborhood is lined with Victorian mansions along a cobblestone street. Original residents include lumber baron Perry Hannah, known as the father of Traverse City, fruit canner John Morgan and his son "Wild Bill" (later mayor of Traverse City), and Dr. James Munson, superintendent of the Northern Michigan Asylum, which today has become the largest historic redevelopment in the nation: The Village at Grand Traverse Commons.

    The Perry Hannah House on Sixth Street was built by the lumber baron as a retirement home. Its turrets, gables and wrap-around porch enclose 6,000 feet of living space. The home has ornate wood carvings, 10 fireplaces and stained glass by Tiffany.
