  • As a Northern Michigan native I have grown up going to the Cherry Festival every year and as an adult, I now volunteer with my children every year. This festival has grown so much over the years and brings tourists from all over the world whether it be for some of the amazing concerts, the Blue Angels airshow, or one of the many other events they have. This festival is packed full of fun and excitement from the midway for rides, to the Junior Royale parade for children, and of course Gibby's Fries and smoked turkey legs (plus local vendors)! The very first festival was in 1926 and now has an annual attendance of over 500,000 over eight days with 150 events and activities, the majority of which are free.

The Guinness Book of World Records awarded 1987 festival participants with the honor of having baked the world's largest cherry pie! Since then the festival has been voted Top Ten Events by USA Today 2014, 1999, 1998, 1997, and annually rated in the top 100 festivals and events in North America by the A.B.A.

Cherry production in Michigan is a major part of the agriculture industry in the state. Farmers harvest more than 90,000 tons of cherries annually. Michigan is the primary source of tart cherries in this country.

This festival takes place in Downtown Traverse City right along the shoreline of Grand Traverse Bay, a beautiful location and a ton of fun that you won't want to miss. We'll see you next year!

Today being Veteran's Day, I was reminded of how blessed we are to have our small town utopia. Everything from our flower bed on West Bay, to the liquor store that's been on Bunker Hill for years, is there because of the protection and sacrifice that all these veterans made for us. With as many years as people have been serving, Veterans are abundant, and often times, go unnoticed. Be sure to thank a Veteran today, those that you know, and those that you don't. Happy Veterans Day!

Spring is a wonderful time to take a stroll through downtown Traverse City! Trees are budding and flowering along Front Street and a cool breeze blows in from West Bay. Shops and restaurants are refreshing their window displays, adding a new coat of paint, and often playing a bit of musical chairs as they relocate. In recent years, new condominiums have changed the face of several downtown streets. The Farmers' Market on Saturday mornings is the perfect place to pick up flowers for your garden and catch up with friends and neighbors. Spring also seems to bring new puppies downtown for their first attempt on a leash. So head downtown and visit your old favorites and find a few new ones too!

After a recent move from Suttons Bay to Traverse City, Michigan Artists Gallery provides patrons with a wide variety of local artists' styles from which to choose their favorites. Nature photography, mixed media, paintings, sculptures, and jewelry may be found in this lovely storefront on East Front Street in downtown Traverse City overlooking both West Grand Traverse Bay and the Boardman River. For the 2017 Art Walk, the Gallery created a theme night, asking all artists to create a piece that was their unique interpretation of Picasso's "Woman with Green Hat". Art Walk participants were then asked to vote for their favorite artist. Stop by Michigan Artists Gallery to find your new favorite artist!

The ever festive St Patrick's Day Pub Crawl around downtown is one of many community events when Traverse City's small-town spirit is evident. Ten pubs and restaurants are on the tour. Many participants only visit a few as they catch up with friends and neighbors. "How's the new job?" "Which resort still has snow left on the hills?" "Congrats on junior's basketball season!" "How's the new baby?" "Is anyone thinking of selling their house in your neighborhood?" "How are your folks?" "When is Joe headed back from Florida?" are snippets of conversations that may be overhead at any of the participating venues. St Pat's in Traverse City is a day when everybody does know your name.

Everyone feels Irish on St Patrick's Day. Creative costumes and a sea o' green fill the sidewalks! A traditional Irish lunch at Minerva's starts the crawl and several stops feature bands in the evening. Green beer and Irish whiskey are the drinks of the day, and Danny Boy is played just a few times. Designated drivers, taxis and shuttle services help everyone have a safe holiday. Hope you've found a place like Traverse City to enjoy St Patrick's Day with friends; if not, head to Traverse City and make some new friends!
