Peg Town/ Maple City was first established in 1866 when William Parks and J. T. Sturtevant opened a shoe peg factory in the area. The community that grew up around it was first known as Peg Town. In 1866 the local post office was established and the name "Maple City" was chosen as the official name of the village. The shoe peg factory burned down in 1880, but many Leelanau County locals still refer to Maple City as Peg Town.
