Ypsilanti Area Insight

  • "There's restaurants and supermarkets, free parking everywheeeerrrre..." sings Ypsilanti's John Latini about his beloved town. Despite winning songwriter contests in Detroit, Dallas, and Nashville, John still knows what makes Ypsi special. Right next to Ann Arbor, little ol' Ypsi is close to universities, airports, hospitals, industry, recreation, dining, and shopping. But it still retains the perks of being small, with affordable housing, and of course, free parking everywhere!
  • Ypsilanti has tons of fun annual events for all to enjoy. Every Thursday from June to mid-September hundreds of visitors enjoy "Depot Town Cruise Nights" where tons of classic cars cruise the streets! Other than just the regular great restaurants, there are pop-up sidewalk stops where you can grab a bite and watch the show.

Another enjoyable event in the area is the "Ypsi-Arbor Beer Week" where locals enjoy all that Michigan craft beer has to offer with tap takeovers, brewer presentations and more! If you can't make it out for all these wonderful events you have to at least try for the most popular attraction, the Heritage Festival! From August 21-23 Riverside Park hosts this event, which includes live music, family activities, crafts, presentations, and lots of history!

Other great events this month in Ypsi include: Depot Town Bike Nights, Downtown Ypsilanti Farmers Market, First Fridays Ypsilanti, Depot Town Farmers Market, DIYpsi Indie Art Fair, Fire Truck Muster, and my personal favorite Thunder Over Michigan.

  • The Michigan Firehouse Museum is both a historic and learning experience. The original firehouse built in 1898, still stands as part of the museum with a more modern addition to house even more of the changing exhibits. This is a great museum to experience as a large group or individually. There is a lot to see from antique firetrucks to historic artifacts. Other than the historic value of the building itself, the location is within Ypsilanti's Historic Depot Town! Surrounding the museum you can admire the many beautiful homes from the past.
  • The Ypsilanti Automotive Heritage Museum sits right next to the tracks in Depot Town. It first opened as an automotive sales and repair shop in the late 1920's and after several changes in ownership it ended up to be this distinctive museum! The owner has preserved the structure to its original character from nearly 90 years ago. It's an amazing and unique site to see and houses a significant amount of automotive history! The museum features several exhibits ranging from automotive design to service & repair. There are also lots of events hosted by the museum that make for an impressive learning experience.

Sidetrack's is a fun place to enjoy great food within a unique atmosphere! Come down to depot down in Ypsilanti for a good time. This place is known for their renowned burgers and great selection of beer. You can eat in their distinctively decorated indoor dining space or enjoy one of their four outdoor patios where you can watch the train pass by. This local favorite is just across the tracks from the Ypsilanti Auto Heritage Museum as well as just down the road from the Michigan Firehouse Museum. Come in for happy hour or host your event next door at Frenchie's! This is a great restaurant to experience!
