Growing up in Chesaning, I always wondered about its history. The area in the early 1800's was owned by the Chippewa Indians and full of several species of trees except for a few fields of corn. There were 15,000 acres known as the "Big Rock" reservation, and those were settled by settlers from Massachusetts. They named it Northampton in honor of their home they had left. Legislature changed the name to Chesaning in 1847 with Chesaning meaning big rock. The "Big Rock" is found east of downtown today on the property of Big Rock Elementary. In honor of the Chippewa Indians, Chesaning Union Schools' mascot is the Indians.

As you explore Chesaning, you will find two beautiful parks. Cole Park is close to downtown on the Shiawassee River. It features river rapids, a playscape and a pedestrian bridge. Showboat Park is also on the Shiawassee River featuring an amphitheater, ball diamonds, a boat launch, and pavilions. Showboat Park is the location of many festivals such as the Fourth of July Fireworks, River Days Festival, and the Mexican-American Festival. Both parks have picnic areas and plenty of fishing. Chesaning is a friendly warm town waiting for you to come enjoy and discover all it has to offer!

Our favorite time of year! The Annual Christmas Candlelight Walk kicks off the holiday season with luminaries lining the downtown boulevard and hundreds of folks walking through town enjoying the decorations, hot chocolate, strolling minstrels, nativity scenes and carriage rides. The downtown businesses join along with gingerbread house displays decorated by local elementary students. Great time to kick off the holiday season and Santa arrives to visit with children during all the festivities. While you are in Chesaning, go to Santa's Village at the Saginaw County Fairgrounds Saturday and Sunday, 12:00 - 7:00 pm for the next 4 weekends (beginning November 28th). It is the place to be, you won't want to miss it!
