The last of the Sault freighter traffic passed through the Sault Sainte Marie, Michigan, locks in late January 2019, thereby closing the shipping season. Since the closure important maintenance and repairs to the Sault locks are being completed in our most frigid temperatures and adverse conditions. The 2019 shipping season will soon be underway as we celebrate the opening of the locks later this month.

Our community and local hockey rink, Pullar Stadium have been named as one of the ten finalists for Kraft's "Hockeytown, USA" competition! This nationwide competition seeks to identify the nation's community most dedicated to fostering and supporting the great sport of hockey. The word "Yooper" has long been used by Michiganders to refer to residents of the Upper Peninsula. It means a lot more than where you're from, though. It embodies an attitude, a toughness and a friendliness you don't find anywhere else. Merriam-Webster announced recently that "Yooper" will be in the 2014 edition of their iconic dictionary. It's about time!
