There is a covered road that takes you from Atlantic Mine to Redridge, on the western shores of Lake Superior. I was heading out to show a home and decided to head down Covered Drive to get to the appointment. It was a beautiful, sunny fall day! Be sure to take this drive when color season is upon us. It can be found by heading west off of M26, just west of downtown Houghton, onto Canal Road. A couple of miles down, turn left on Coles Creek Road and take it to the end, approximately 4 miles. It will turn into Covered Drive. It's windy and gravel, but you'll not be disappointed.

Besides an abundance of mining history, four seasons of ever-changing weather and trails everywhere, you'll find many geocache sites to look for near South Range. It's easy to do with a smartphone; download an inexpensive geocache app for a small fee (there are free apps but they don't seem to do enough) and get started. Set up an account. The app will locate the hidden treasures nearby and will give you the terrain difficulty and other descriptions. Of course it isn't all that accurate but I've always found the hidden treasures. It's a fun activity you can do alone or with a group. Leave a note and the date and time you visited in the 'guest book'!

Glorious fall colors are all around. If you enjoy mild temperatures, beautiful surroundings and whole walking trails, this is the place to be! But it won't last long! Make your plans to visit any town in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan soon. You may want to stay!

South Range, in the Adams Township area, provides a variety of housing options. South Range is an incorporated village with village services. There is a newer subdivision near the elementary school that has many new homes and more lots for sale. There are also mining homes dating back to the Copper Mining boom era of the early 1900's. The village is surrounded by Adams Township and the unincorporated towns of Atlantic Mine, Baltic, Trimountain and Painesdale, otherwise known at the Range Towns. Each of these areas have newer sewer systems and township water. For recreation, there is the ATV #3 trail running through the area, along with lots of woods/ trails to hike and bike.
